Summer Time Splash Down!

Good Afternoon Howell!  

The first day of summer is quickly approaching and I wanted to share some Summer Time Safety tips to keep everyone in the family happy and healthy.  Here are my favorites from the AAP's (American Academy of Pediatrics) long list of Sun andWater Safety Tips:

1.) Peak sun hours are between 10:00am and 4:00pm, if you have small children make sure they are well protected in shaded areas.

2.) Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating!

3.) UVA and UVB rays can harm you even when it's cloudy out, so always wear SPF 15 or higher when you go outside.

4.) When active in the heat for longer than 1 hour kids need to take a break every 20 minutes to either drink water or a sports beverage. 

5.) Share pool safety instructions with friends, family, and neighbors in the event you are not home to enforce them. 

6.) Teenager and adults should be educated of the consequences and dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and prescription medications. 

7.) Always have a swim buddy!  Even good swimmers need help sometimes. 

8.) Teach children about rip currents and what to do should they be caught in one. 

9.) Never allow a child to swim in the ocean without a lifeguard present.

10.) Use extra caution near water and sand since UV rays can reflect and cause sunburn faster.

Yikes, it has been a WHILE!  Sorry Howell, work has really taken off for the busy season and I was shocked to see my last post was last month.  It won't happen again ;)

So what's on tap for this weekend?!?  Tomorrow is Flag day and Sunday is Father's Day - so many possibilities for weekend fun :)  If you are looking for activities to do with friends and family check out HowellPatch.com here to see what's in store for tomorrow (I saw a Summer Flea Market, I love walking around local markets!).

As for Father's Day I'm much more interested to hear about what you all are doing :)  Post pictures and leave comments on what your family is doing to celebrate the men in your life named Dad.  I actually chocked up a little watching this Dove commercial, it really does sum up "Dad" beautifully.

It's AYFC Time Howell!

Hometown Hero Needs Our Help

Howell Resident Ryan Connell

I don’t know about you Howell, but I’m tired of writing about snow and how Mother Nature needs to give being The Ice Queen a rest.  Instead I want to focus our attention on another Howell resident that needs our help, Ryan Connell.  Ryan is a 27-year-old Veteran who served in Iraq from 2008-2012; he returned home with a plan to become a History Teacher, and headaches he thought would go away on their own.      

After moving to Clementon to finish his education at Rowan University, Ryan suffered a grand mal seizure and was taken to the hospital where they discovered a mass.  After a craniotomy Ryan received devastating news: He had Stage 4 Glioblastoma, it’s the most rapid growing form of brain cancer.  Ryan has been fighting for the past year and has been winning!  However, new masses have formed in an area of his brain that are affecting his speech and concentration, and will cause more harm than good if the doctors operate.

But there’s always hope …

Duke University Hospital in North Carolina is running a successful clinical trial that will help cure Ryan’s cancer and put him back into remission.  He needs our help with raising medical and traveling expenses since he was dropped from his father’s health insurance after turning 27, and has yet to receive his Military Benefits due to his “Pending Medical Discharge From The Military.”

Fight Back Against Winter!

Okay fellow Howell-ians, raise your hand if you're about to go on a mission to destroy the evil creature they call Punxsutawney Phil ... don't be shy ... I asked if anyone in the office wanted to do this and my entire team threw their arms up.

Six More Weeks Of Winter, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?  

I don't know what's worse; six more weeks of toe numbing cold, or Mother Nature trying to cram all six weeks into six days.  The fact we have another snowstorm on the way makes me want to wave the white flag in defeat, how much more can we take?  I'm not just talking about the temperature either, my cabin fever is starting to get out of control ...

Howell, it's time to fight back!     

I came across an article while trying to contact my blogging muse, and I was completely inspired by what Alysha Findley posted on the website www.apartmenttherapy.com.  She wrote an article called "Life at Home: Ways To Enjoy a Grown-up 'Snow Day' Anytime," and the suggestions she offered actually got me excited for the next round of punishment Mother Nature feels like dishing out.  For the full article click here and post in the comments your favorite activity.

Gwen's Story

Good Afternoon Howell,

Today’s post is dedicated to a lovely little girl with a very serious illness; this one’s for you little Ms. Gwen.

Two-year-old Gwendelyn along with the rest of the Marra family live in Howell New Jersey, and Gwen has been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a high-risk cancer.  What started off as a routine doctors visit turned into questions about why her stomach looked enlarged, to an ultra sound, to a specialist exam, to the words no mother wants to hear, “Mrs. Marra, I have very bad news.  Gwen appears to have a mass in her liver.” 

Needless to say, the Marra family was forever changed.  Gwen underwent a 16-day testing period at Robert Wood Johnson.  She had biopsies of her tumor, samples of bone marrow taken, and several scans; in the end Gwen was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma and found out the tumor was not in her liver, but on her adrenal gland.   

Thankfully, Gwen’s cancer is treatable, but it will take time.  Gwen is holding up her end of the bargain by staying positive and fighting, but she needs our help!  Jennifer Mele of The Pampered Chef is hosting an online fundraiser for Gwen and her family.  For more information on donating please visit their Facebook Page.

So, last week I was given a snap shot from Valerie with a notice she received from Howell Township:

I wish I had posted this earlier in the week!  Digging my RAV4 out from under the snow was not pleasant, and neither was shoveling the driveway, sidewalk, walkway, and parts of the street.  If anyone out there is interested in helping out during snow events (aka - Polar Vortexes From Antarctica), please give the number a call, or fill out the application here.  I hope everyone is staying safe and warm during this extremely chilly winter!  Take care and I'll keep you all posted on anything Howell :)  

HOWELL IS THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL

For any American Idol fans out there how amazing was it to see one of our own auditioning in front of the judges?  And not only audition, but get a Hollywood Ticket!!  That's right people, Trending Howell is giving a very special Shout Out and CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Stephanie Hanvey for wowing the judges last night on FOX's American Idol.  They all agreed she has "something," that made them want to see more of her throughout the competition.  

To Stephanie, from all of us back home in Howell - YOU GO GIRL!!!

Tree Removal

HOT OFF THE PRESSES HOWELL!!

Since most of you took this past weekend (and snow day!) to take down the decorations, cut up the cardboard boxes, and kick that tree to the curb; you should know what the township wants you to do with that Douglas Fur formally known as Your Christmas Tree.

For those of you who don't mind waiting (or have yet to take it down) the Tree Collection starts next Monday January 13th.  You need to have the tree out on the curb the evening of the 12th.

However, if you're not one to wait around for a week, you can dispose of the tree yourself at the Howell Recycling Center between 7:30am and 3:30pm seven days a week.
